Ram Saraogi, an MIT graduate, came back from the US 25 years ago and set up a small shed in Goregaon, a suburb in Mumbai, to manufacture plastic bottles for Johnson & Johnson. Today, his company, Chemco Group, has registered sales of over Rs 150 crore and is expanding across the country. It currently has five factories and hopes to add one every year going forward. “The food industry is demanding better packaging now, not just in design but also in maintaining freshness for longer,” says Ram Saraogi’s son, Gaurav Saraogi (in picture), who is also the director of Chemco Group. The company’s current capacity of 18,000 metric tonnes per annum will increase by 50 per cent in three years.
